Formulation Philosophy

We evolved with plants and have been using them in our medicines for millennia. It is inherent to our humanity that we gravitate towards, understand, and benefit from the wide array of vitamins, nutrients and minerals they provide.

At Sḵwálwen, we sustainably harvest and source sacred plants that are known to help heal, hydrate, renew and bring balance. Our heritage botanicals grow and thrive in particular terroir. We observe these plants throughout their growing season, looking for the cues and signs that they are ready to be harvested. This kind of awareness leads to a connection to place and a knowledge that can only be developed over time.

Each batch of Sḵwálwen products is made with care and intention, bringing you luxurious skincare products free from harsh chemicals, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic colors and parabens.

This difference is felt in the rich, soothing textures of our formulas, and seen in the bright, soft, glowing skin that is achieved.

Our Formulation Philosophy

Rooted in four promises

1. Indigenous Plant Science

As members of the Squamish Nation, we carry forward the wisdom of our ancestors, formulating our products based on the intricate understanding of Indigenous plant science, a legacy passed down through generations of our people.

2. Sustainably Harvested & Sourced

Our commitment to the Earth echoes the teachings of our ancestors. We uphold the values of sustainability, transparency, and regenerative practices, respecting Mother Earth and ensuring the continued abundance of her gifts.

3. Inspired for Ceremony

Each product is a testament to our ancestral traditions, a tribute to sacred ceremonies of reclamation and renewal. As you journey with us, you're not just using a product, you're partaking in a timeless ritual, reconnecting with the wisdom of the Land.

4. Reclamation of Skin Health

Sḵwálwen is an invitation to embark on a journey of renewal, embracing our heritage of natural care and nurturing, reclaiming your skin's vitality. Our formulations are designed with a deep respect for nature, promoting a harmonious balance between your skin and the world around you.

Heritage Botanicals

Plants hold ancient and ethereal allure. They have supported health, nourishment, spiritual awakening and ceremony since time before memory.

We have evolved together, people and plants. The stunning diversity of species, shapes, sizes, colors, scents and structures reveal the depth of our codependency.  For millennia, we have gathered berries and bark, leaves and stems, nectars and essences to make our medicines and feed our families. We take great comfort in the certainty of the seasons, the cycles of rebirth, bloom and return, and the ritual of reap and sow.

Our relationship with plants is familial, reciprocal, reverential. It is in this context that we created Sḵwálwen.

Kalkáy - Wild Rose

The scent of Ḵalḵáy/ Wild Rose (Rosa spp ) transports me to the generations before me of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh kin who have been in relationships with this plant from the time before memory. The Wild Rose symbolizes the grace of our Land. Its petals soothe and soften, while its seeds, rich in nutrients, fortify skin's barrier.

Chamomile

Chamomile is a gentle, aromatic herb derived from the flowers of Chamaemelum nobile (Roman chamomile). Rich in azulene, bisabolol, and flavonoids, it’s a centuries-old remedy known for its soothing properties. This beloved flower cherished for its gentle and calming essence, Chamomile's soothing properties provide a comforting touch to the skin.

Tewín’xw - Berry

Tiny and tart, the crimson berries bursts with vitality. Berry oils are cold-pressed from the seed of the berry. They are rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants. Berry oils can help manage eczema, dermatitis, and other skin conditions.

Ch’átyay - Devil's Club

Ch’atyaý is one of the most culturally and spiritually important plants in Squamish territory and across its range in general. Each spring when the forests start to awaken, the scent of ch’atyaý signals its presence. Sacred and demanding of respect, Devil's Club (Oplopanax horridus) teaches us resilience. Its roots dig deep into the Earth Mother, drawing strength and endurance. When applied to the skin, it helps soothe the look and feel of the skin, echoing the serenity of the Land.

Séliy̓ay̓ - Oregon Grape

I learned about Séliýaý from my aunties who are traditional wool- and cedar-weavers in Squamish. Vibrant and richly hued, Oregon Grape (Mahonia aquifolium) is a symbol of abundance and vitality. Bursting with antioxidants, it aids the overall appearance of your skin, promoting a healthy and radiant complexion.

Ts’exts’ix - Stinging Nettle

Ts’exts’ix comes from the root word ts’ix, meaning “singed” or “burned.” My great-uncle taught me that the stinging of nettle indicates the powerful medicinal properties of this plant. Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica) is a testament to the strength in vulnerability. It's power belies a nurturing heart, rich in nutrients that invigorate and rejuvenate your skin.

Mimts' - Usnea Lichen

Mimts’ / Usnea Lichen (Usnea spp) is characteristic of rainforests in the Pacific Northwest. A lichen that hangs from moss-covered tree branches, it signifies the cleanliness of the air. This unique and resilient plant thrives in the most challenging environment and is known for its clearing, cooling and clarifying properties, helping to maintain balance, leaving it feeling soft and supple.

Si7semáchxw - Yarrow

Si7semáchxw / Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is an incredible healer. This plant has been valued for its medicinal and culinary applications for millennia. Si7semáchxw is a testament to the courage of our ancestors. It restores skin and promotes resilience.

Xásxast - Sweetgrass

Xásxast / Sweetgrass (Hierochloe odorata) has been woven into our ceremonies for centuries. Its sweet, comforting aroma brings tranquility, while its purifying properties safeguard skin. It's soothing properties helps to rejuvenate and refresh the skin.

Téýwilh - Sage

Téýwilh / Sage (Salvia officinalis) is a highly aromatic perennial herb known for its cleansing and antimicrobial properties. Sage has always been a beacon of purity and wisdom. Its purifying properties cleanse the skin, helping remove impurities and revealing a more radiant complexion. Sage brings clarifying power to skincare through its ability to tone, purify, and balance the skin.

Ḵalḵ - Rosehip

Ḵalḵ - Rosehip (Rosa canina) has long been cherished for its rejuvenating gifts. Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, it renews and revitalizes, imbuing the skin with resilience. Rosehip oil contains essential fatty acids and is a great emollient for dry or mature skin. It is also perfect for nearly any skin type and can be used in all fine skin care recipes.

Xápáýay - Western Red Cedar

Xápáýay / Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) has been a cultural keystone species for generations upon generations of Indigenous peoples living within its range. Western red cedar has strong antibacterial and antifungal properties and can be used topically as an infusion or tincture to treat fungal skin infections.
